We’re writing a book about interpretation! It’ll be published in the fall of 2028 by Bloomsbury Academic and the American Alliance of Museums.
17 years after our first ranger programs, we’re packaging our ideas into a guide that explains the why and how behind audience-centered interpretation. We’re shifting the focus: objects, places, and other “tangibles” aren’t catalysts for understanding the place better; they’re catalysts for understanding ourselves better. Docents, educators, facilitators, and interpreters: this book is for you!
We’ve been geeking out about interpretation forever (it’s the basis of our friendship; half of our camera rolls are photos of museum exhibits). About a year and a half ago, we were lamenting the fact that there wasn’t a definitive, succinct primer on what audience-centered experience is, why it’s the future of interpretation, and how any frontline interpreter can do it. So, we decided to write that book. We’re transforming our insights from coaching, training, and supervising interpretive teams into a resource to support interpreters in doing their best work: crafting unforgettable experiences that connect us with each other and the world.
And, we want your help! Please share examples on this form (your own or ones you’ve seen!) of interpretation deliberately designed to foster authentic human connection.
Writing a book is a big undertaking and a long journey. Subscribe to our Behind the Scenes Book Blog to cheer us on. We’ll only post every few months–most of our writing energy is going to the book. But, following along on our blog is a great way to stay in touch with us and celebrate milestones like starting our contract, submitting our manuscript, picking a title, and, of course, publishing!
We wouldn’t be here without the brilliance, mentorship, and support of a lot of people: thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You’ve inspired us to keep innovating, adapting, and moving interpretation forward. Time to write!
